What to Expect During Spinal Decompression Therapy

Spinal decompression therapy is the safest and most effective non-invasive treatment method for herniated discs, age-related disc degeneration, and bone spurs or growths that affect the sciatic nerve. Our chiropractor, Dr. David Lemons, may recommend you undergo spinal decompression in Oxnard if you have pain, numbness, tingling, and muscle weakness that is worsening or can’t be treated using other methods.

What Should I Expect During Spinal Decompression Therapy?

When you visit our chiropractor for spinal decompression, you will lie fully clothed on a comfortable, padded table. Dr. Lemons will control the motorized traction table using a computer. The table will gently and slowly stretch your body and spine, correcting your spinal alignment and improving your balance. If you have disc herniation, this gentle stretching should shift your disc back into place and alleviate the pressure on your sciatic nerve. Each treatment should only take 30-45 minutes, and you can resume your normal activities afterward.

Am I a Good Candidate for Spinal Decompression?

You are a good candidate for spinal decompression if you have symptoms of sciatica or disc herniation, chronic lower back or neck pain, bone spurs that are compressing the sciatic nerve, or age-related disc generation. You should not undergo spinal decompression if you:

  • Are pregnant
  • Have broken vertebrae
  • Have undergone spinal fusion
  • Have had a failed back surgery
  • Have an artificial disc or spinal implant
  • Have had multiple surgeries without improvement

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

The number of treatments you need will depend on a variety of factors: the cause of your symptoms, the severity of your condition, your overall health, your age, and how well you tolerate the treatment. Most patients undergo one or two sessions per week over a period of 4-8 weeks.

Is Spinal Decompression Painful?

Spinal decompression therapy is not painful, and many patients find it quite relaxing. Some even fall asleep during the procedure. You may experience mild pain, tenderness, or achiness in the first 24 hours after your session.

Is Spinal Decompression the Only Treatment for My Condition?

No, our chiropractor may recommend additional chiropractic therapies in addition to spinal decompression if he thinks you would benefit from a multi-directional approach.
